This is the previous fortified system whose obsolescence was demonstrated in the 1870 war. These forts at the back were mainly built between:
- the 1832 agreement by which the City of Lyon transfers the use of the fortifications to the government
- and the upheavals of 1859 due to the introduction of rifled shells.
An interesting urban walk follows the enclosure of the right bank of the Saône:
- it starts from the Vaise fort, avenue Saint-Exupéry,
- goes up along the "Fort de Loyasse", up to the Observance,
- passes the "Porte de Loyasse" (known as bastion 6) at the junction with the Piste de la Sarra,
- enters the cemetery to see the "Lunnette du Fossoyeur,
- borders the south corner of the cemetery to see the remains of bastion 5, in the middle of rue Cardinal Gerlier,
- passes through the remains of the Fourvière Gate,
- takes the Montée du Télégraphe, then goes to the public park, at the bottom of the Abbé Larue's car park,
- arrives at bastion 1, with a beautiful view over the Saône.
- In addition, see the panorama view starting from the left bank of the Saône, the Quarantine walls: the medieval wall on the right and the Rohau de Fleury wall on the left.
