The forts at the back

Version française fr_flag

This is the previous fortified system whose obsolescence was demonstrated in the 1870 war. These forts at the back were mainly built between:

  • the 1832 agreement by which the City of Lyon transfers the use of the fortifications to the government
  • and the upheavals of 1859 due to the introduction of rifled shells.

An interesting urban walk follows the enclosure of the right bank of the Saône:

  • it starts from the Vaise fort, avenue Saint-Exupéry,
  • goes up along the "Fort de Loyasse", up to the Observance,
  • passes the "Porte de Loyasse" (known as bastion 6) at the junction with the Piste de la Sarra,
  • enters the cemetery to see the "Lunnette du Fossoyeur,
  • borders the south corner of the cemetery to see the remains of bastion 5, in the middle of rue Cardinal Gerlier,
  • passes through the remains of the Fourvière Gate,
  • takes the Montée du Télégraphe, then goes to the public park, at the bottom of the Abbé Larue's car park,
  • arrives at bastion 1, with a beautiful view over the Saône.
  • In addition, see the panorama view starting from the left bank of the Saône, the Quarantine walls: the medieval wall on the right and the Rohau de Fleury wall on the left.
